New technology has always sparked new health fears, but when
The New York Times published an article entitled The Health Concerns in
Wearable Tech by writer Nick Belton in the papers Styles section on March 18,
2015, the respected newspaper hit a collective nerve. To say that the article
stirred up controversy will be an understatement. However, the big question
remains: Can smart watches cause cancer? Hidden Dangers? Right away, well-seen
publications from The Washington Post to Business Insider to The Verge called
The New York Times out on sensationalist journalism, moving from junk science
as truth, utilizing a headline to click, and causing problems where none exist.
The Washington Post also pointed to this study on the
American National Cancer Institute web site, which explicitly states that most
research has found no association between using mobile phones and the onset of
cancer. Therefore, case closed, right? Not so fast. Cellular Concerns - As we
said in the first sentence, new technology has always sparked health fears, and
smart watches represent some of the latest technology around. Like the
avalanche-like controversies surrounding vaccines and genetically engineered
foods, the fear of the unknown is strong with regards to wearing or using
strong communication devices close to our bodies. There's also the concern that
we do not always know that something we're doing is harmful until it starts
harming us. For instance, for the first two-thirds of the Twentieth Century,
cigarettes were considered harmless, their true health implications weren't
revealed until smokers started dying of cancer of the lung, and even then,
cigarette companies tried mightily to suppress the truth.
Is that what's happening with mobile cell phones and smart
watches? The answer is that we probably won't know for some time and that's
frightening to many people. There are also studies that do link exposure to RF
radiation from mobile cell phones to tumors, which keeps concerns high.
